Global South AI Safety Hackathon 2026
📅 Friday, 19 June 2026 → Sunday, 21 June 2026 in 14 days
A three-day Apart Research sprint bringing AI-safety research to Latin America, Africa and Asia — competing within regions, not against the usual handful of well-funded labs.
Global South AI Safety Hackathon. Held 19–21 June 2026, online with in-person hubs in Bogotá, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Mérida/Guadalajara, Santa Cruz, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Bengaluru, New Delhi, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Lusaka. Organised by Apart Research, supported by Schmidt Sciences. Free.
A weekend research sprint where teams build AI-safety tools, evaluations and policy analyses, competing within their own region (Latin America, Africa, Asia) rather than globally — with the best teams pulled into the Apart Fellowship.
Its premise is pointed: none of the world's top-100 AI institutions sit in Africa or Latin America, yet AI risks land differently there — jailbreaks via low-resource languages, bias from non-local training data in health and hiring. This is one of the few serious efforts to bring the Global South into frontier safety work rather than treat it as an afterthought, which also makes it a rare worldwide-distributed entry in the safety calendar.
